Soil Sampling is an important part of the field nutrient application program. If you don't know what you have, you won't know what nutrients to apply. Some operators take random samples on each field and other operators take a grid sample in a systematic manner to let them know what nutrients are available in each area of the field.
If the results of the grid soil samples are loaded in a computer, this can be used for determining commercial application of fertilizer if the applicator has a similar GPS program in their tractors.
For manure and effluent application purposes, one only needs to take 15 random samples in each field. These samples are put in a ziplock bag and mixed to give an average for the whole field. These samples are sent to a certified lab for analysis.
After the soil samples are taken, a sample of the lagoon solids and water needs to be taken so one can determine the amount of nutrients in the effluent.
From the lab analysis of the soil and lagoon effluent we can determine the proper agronomic rate for the crops intended to be planted.
